The latest concept from veteran chef/restaurateur Vicente Del Rio, Casa Azul Cantina is a full-service restaurant in the heart of Westwood Village that marries the best of the sophisticated approach of Del Rio's FRIDA Mexican Cuisine, with the casual ease of his FRIDA Taquería concept. After operating two successful FRIDA restaurants—establishments that have helped change the perception of Mexican cooking in Los Angeles over the last 10 years—and two casual FRIDA Taquerías, Del Rio's Casa Azul Cantina is an approachable restaurant with the same emphasis on authentic Mexican cuisine, served in a setting that celebrates the art and culture of his native country. "I was inspired by the cantinas of Mexico," he says of his newest concept. "There, people enjoy great food and drinks for hours in a relaxed setting."
Named after the original Casa Azul in Coyoacán, Mexico, that renowned artist Frida Kahlo shared with husband/painter Diego Rivera, Casa Azul Cantina celebrates the authentic, diverse regional cuisines of Mexico—from Mayan-influenced dishes of the Yucatán to the complex moles of Oaxaca or coastal cuisine of Baja California. A lively bar scene features an extensive selection of premium tequilas and mezcals, as well as other fine spirits, while the distinctive blue and turquoise décor pays homage to the spirit not only of Kahlo but Mexican artistic tradition as a whole. Additionally, the restaurant's location in Westwood Village offers area residents, students, and professionals alike a unique space in which to enjoy authentic cuisine and inventive drinks for lunch, happy.
